The development of medicines against poverty related and neglected diseases and especially the conduct of clinical trials in developing countries require an expertise beyond the profound knowledge of the current international regulations and guidances. Based on our in-depth experience in low income and particularly African countries, ways are sought for each individual project to balance the local regulatory and ethical requirements with a good project performance.
The Swiss Tropical & Public Health Institute has developed over the past two decades a substantial expertise in the field of validating and implementing health interventions. The activities include a large number of clinical trials performed in collaboration with various partners in the area of tropical medicine.
Clinical trial management, support and monitoring
The Pharmaceutical Medicine Unit (PMU) of the Department of Medicines Research is dedicated to design, implement, manage and monitor clinical trials (Phase I to Phase IV) in this particular field. To accomplish its goals the Swiss TPH-PMU is embedded into a framework of expertise within the Institute and international research networks.
Through longstanding collaborations and contacts, we can offer rapid services in a large number of countries in Africa, Asia and Central Europe. Monitoring of clinical trials can either be provided by our specialized staff based in Basel, through a network of over a dozen associated regional monitors or any combination of both.
