Biostatistics and Computational Sciences |
The Biostatistics and Computational Sciences Unit within the Department
of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Swiss Tropical and Public
Health Institute (Swiss TPH) conducts long-term research projects in
epidemiology, in collaboration with biomedical scientists. It also
carries out methodological research and develops and applies new methods
in biostatistics and epidemiology. The main areas of focus are
simulation modeling of malaria epidemiology; Bayesian approaches for the
statistical modeling of space-time patterns of disease, (with a
particular focus on the geographical distributions of parasitic
infections); and analysis of longitudinal studies of respiratory health
in Switzerland.
The unit offers consulting, and data services to the other units in the
Swiss TPH, and within Basel University. This includes consultation on
study design, statistical analysis and bioinformatics, and also the
development of public health software applications. We teach statistics
and epidemiology to medical undergraduates, MSc and PhD students, and
also in external courses.
