Phase III of Egyptian-Swiss Radiology Project Implemented by the Swiss TPH is Officially Launched
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation announced on 29 May, 2012, the official signing of the agreement for Phase III of the Egyptian-Swiss Radiology Project implemented by the Health Technology and Telemedicine Unit of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health’s Swiss Centre for International Health. The project, which began in 2002, is jointly financed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population. Phase III will span 2012-2015 with total project costs of approximately 8.8Mi. Benjamin Frey, Deputy Head of the Swiss Programme Office, Egypt, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation wrote to the involved parties:
I am happy to inform you that the Memorandum of Undertaking for the Egypt-Swiss Radiology Project (ESRP) was signed this afternoon by the Egyptian Minister of Health, Prof. Dr. Fouad El-Nawawi, and the Swiss Ambassador to Egypt, Dominik Furgler. After a short preliminary meeting and introductory speeches from the Minister and the Ambassador, the documents were signed in the presence of representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Health as well the Swiss Embassy and the Swiss Programme Office. The event was also attended by several journalists who carried out (television) interviews with the Minister, the Ambassador and the Project Director, Dr. Dorria Salem. The latter held a short presentation on the results achieved as well as the future of the project.
Throughout the event, the interlocutors emphasized the merits of the Swiss-Egyptian cooperation in general and the ESPR specifically. Especially considering the current political situation in Egypt and the insecurity in relation to the future cooperation with the new government, this event can be considered a big success and we can now all look forward to the implementation of phase III!

The Egyptian-Swiss Radiology Project (ESRP) is instrumental in bringing outdated services and equipment up to current international standards. In close cooperation with the Directorate of Radiology of the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), the ESRP elaborates on guidelines and standards, rehabilitates facilities, procures and installs appropriate equipment, and provides training for technicians, managers, radiologists and maintenance engineers. These measures have, and continue to show success in strengthening the health sytems infrastructure to provide proper care for patients dependent on the health services available.
