Rehabilitation of radiology services |
Location
The project is the second phase of the Egypt-Swiss Radiology Project that started in 2002. It is scheduled from 2007 to 2010 and plans to cover all 26 Governorates, while the 1rst phase covered only 10 governorates. The project should target about 100 X-ray departments at different level hospitals.
Background
Egypt has been accelerating its efforts in the past 6 years to rehabilitate and reform its health care system. Still, quality basic services are not yet provided in many areas of medical care. The project aims at front line basic diagnostic radiological services. Beside appropriate equipment, importance is being placed on the update of guidelines elaborated during the 1st phase: standard procedures and good practice, standard X-ray facility, radiation safety and quality assurance notably. Some 250 professionals, both medical and non medical staff (hospital managers, radiographers, biomedical engineers and technicians, etc.) will be trained on various topics.

Whereas the Egyptian Government will take care of the refurbishment of sites, the Government of the Swiss Confederation provides the necessary financing for the procurement of new radiology equipment and supports the project with an extensive technical assistance.

Objectives
The main project goal is to extend support to radiology services in Egyptian hospitals according to local requirements and international standards.
Outputs
- improve human resources management in diagnostic radiology
- develop implementation of standard procedures and good practices
- update and support implementation of guidelines developed during the 1st phase
- introduce quality assurance schemes
- introduce accreditation scheme for radiology departments
- renovate according to MoHP facility standards and equip X-ray departments with conventional equipment and introduce and test digital radiology equipment
- strengthen medical equipment maintenance
Financial Volume
The overall project cost of the second phase amount to CHF 16.6 Mio. Including contribution of the Government of Egypt for the rehabilitation of sites.
