Implementation of ASAQ Winthrop® in the Ivory Coast

Under the direction of the sanofi-aventis the “Access to Medicines” department, a multicentric observational pilot study on the implementation of ASAQ Winthrop® in health centers in the district of Agboville, Ivory Coast, has been initiated. The Swiss TPH has been contracted for one year for the monitoring of the study.
ASAQ Winthrop®, a fixed dose combination of artesunate and amodiaquine (AS + AQ), was the first antimalarial treatment to be developed by a public/private partnership, between sanofi-aventis and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi). ASAQ Winthrop® is available under the name Artesunate Amodiaquine Winthrop® for public markets, and under the brand name Coarsucam® in private markets.

ASAQ Winthrop® is included since 2008 on WHO’s list of pre-qualified medicines and available in 31 countries in four different presentations to treat infants, young children, children and adolescents/ adults. The treatments are easy to follow: adult and adolescent patients take only two tablets daily for three days, in a single daily dose. Children under 13 years of age, the group most at-risk from malaria, take only one tablet a day for three days. Recently, ASAQ Winthrop® shelf-life was extended to 36 months; it it the first WHO-prequalified ACT with a 36-month shelf-life.
The end of this observational study is planned for mid-2012.
