Swiss Radiology Technology for Public Hospitals in Egypt
On November 2nd 2011, not even a year after the Egyptian revolution, a ceremony was held at the "Om Elmasryeen Hospital" in Giza Governorate to celebrate a successfully completed bilateral project aiming at the improvement of radiology services in Egypt. The project includes the provision of new Swiss X-ray equipment to 111 public hospitals.
The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) has been active with its economic cooperation and development program in Egypt for over three decades. The financing of basic infrastructure through mixed-financing lines in the total amount of CHF 330 Mio (loans from Swiss commercial banks and SECO grants) has been a key component of this partnership. One important project with mixed-financing was the Egypt-Swiss Radiology Project (ESRP).
In a first phase, the ESRP provided improved radiology equipment and services to 80 public hospitals in Egypt. Based on this successful experience, the second phase of the project succeeded to renovate and further equip 111 hospitals across the country during the period of 2007 to 2011.
The Swiss company Josef Betschart AG supplied the radiology equipment for both phases. In addition to the supply and installation of hardware, the project also included professional trainings, the development of standard practice guidelines and in pilot projects for digital- and teleradiology. The technical assistance and project coordination was provided by a specialized team from the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.
The delivery of the equipment and the completion of the project continued also during the recent revolution in the country. The public hospitals under the ESRP managed to ensure high quality services even during the most difficult days.
