Medicines Research - MedRes

Pharmaceutical medicine is a medical scientific specialty concerned with the discovery, development, evaluation, registration, monitoring and medical aspects of marketing of medicines for the benefit of patients and the public health.

The Department of Medicines Research (MedRes) of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) was founded in 2008 and started operations in 2009.  The aim is to contribute effectively to bridge the “translational gaps” in the R&D-process for drugs, vaccines and public health interventions between promising research outcomes and their validation and implementation for impact in resource limited economies.

The fields of activity comprise (i) research and (ii) the provision of services in areas of

  • the collection of fundamental epidemiologic data
  • the lead selection of new active molecules against neglected diseases
  • the conduct of regulatory clinical trials
  • the assistance to product registration & surveillance, as well as
  • the contribution to procedures which allow access to new medicinal achievements in resource limited regions.

Within the overall mission and strategy of the Swiss TPH, the MedRes sees its role in providing high quality services, research and training in the field of pharmaceutical medicine in the validation of new interventions, as well as at the interfaces between innovation & validation and validation & application.

The strategies of the MedRes entail the provision of high quality services as contract research organisation specialised in the conduct of clinical trials in resource limited areas, the provision of services and training in other relevant areas of pharmaceutical medicine, the development of large scale effectiveness studies and the contribution to research in those fields of work.

Departmental Activities

Further Units will be created as the MedRes will develop through enlarged ranges of activities. Currently, all activities not directly falling into the responsibility of the Pharmaceutical Medicine Unit are directly handled at departmental level.
