Past professional activities

  • Developing projects, teaching and training, and support in health social sciences
  • Developing and supporting Indo-Swiss partnerships for research and training  at the Swiss TPH, Basel
  • Heading a research group in cultural epidemiology, developing mixed methods for interdisciplinary and integrated quantitative and qualitative research in mental health, infectious and chronic non-communicable disease studies in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Research on cross-cutting health-related interests in stigma, gender and help-seeking behaviour for infectious and chronic diseases.
  • Studying population priorities for public health interventions (e.g., treatment adherence and vaccine acceptance)
  • Cultural studies of suicide and community mental health, and contributing to field trials for cultural psychiatry and classification of mental disorders.

Higher education & qualifications

  • Medical training at the University of Pennsylvania (MD, 1981), with residency training in psychiatry at the Cambridge Hospital, Harvard Medical School (1982-1985), and fellowship training in medical anthropology and public health (1987-1992)
  • PhD (1977) in South Asia Regional Studies, University of Pennsylvania
