Health Care and Management: From Research to Implementation:
This 3 months full time course aims at introducing participants to the fundamentals of international health with a range of skills and knowledge needed to work as a member of a district management team. The participatory course is designed for people who already have a first qualification in a health-related profession, and at least two years professional experience.
Health professionals (medical doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, veterinarians), managers, planners, social scientists, health systems researchers, anthropologists, educators.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Hold a first professional qualification (e.g. Bachelor degree or equivalent)
Have at least 2 years’ professional experience
English language skills: TOEFL Paper 550 /TOEFL Computer 213/TOEFL internet 79 – 80/IELTS 6.0 or native speaker or completed higher education in English (with written proof)
As the number of places in the course is limited, priority will be given to those with experience in a resource constrained country/setting, experience in public health or health promotion, and/or a contract for work in a resource constrained country/setting.
The course is subdivided into four thematic modules.
Introduction and Orientation Setting the Scene
Concepts and Research Methods Basic Tool Kit (Statistics, Research Methods), Applied Epidemiology, Community Approach, Field exercise in a rural part of Switzerland
Health Problems and Responses Essential Laboratory and Parasitology, Health Care, Reproductive and Child Health
Health System Management and Communication Information, Education and Communication in Health, Management Strategies
The course is a 14 weeks full time course with between 20 and 30 contact hours during one week. A substantial amount of unsupervised group work and individual work has to be added. A total of 629 hours student investment time with approx. 60 % direct contact time have to be considered.
Preparation: Participants are expected to have studied the introductory handbook which is sent a few weeks before the start of the course.

Evaluation and Final Degree
Each module comprises an individual or group assessment like exams with short answer questions, group presentation or practical tests. An overall essay and a final oral exam at the end of the diploma-course must be completed.
The HCM Diploma is awarded to those participants who have achieved the required credit points, passed the final oral exam and who have attended at least 80% of the modules.
Total course fee: CHF 7,000 (payable 6 weeks before the course starts).
This sum includes a registration fee of CHF 500, due at the moment of acceptance. Cancellation of participation less than 4 weeks before the beginning of the course will result in an additional fee of CHF 1,000 (HCMTC), CHF 500 (3 weeks and 2 weeks courses) or CHF 200 (1 week courses) charged.
The course fee does not include insurance or other personal living costs during the stay.
A very limited number of scholarships are exclusively reserved for participants from resource constrained countries working in or wishing to engage in primary health care / public health or district-level health services.
