The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) developed an innovative eHealth tool to respond to the primary health needs of children under the age of five years. The ‘ALMANACH’, ALgorithm for the MANAgement of CHildhood illness, is a novel clinical decision support system (CDSS) that provides direct diagnostic and therapeutic support to health care providers (HCP) in fragile settings through mobile technology. Since 2016, the Swiss TPH and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are successfully implementing ALMANACH in a joint endeavour, together with the local Primary Health Care (PHC) authority in Adamawa State, Nigeria.
Starting in April 2020, Swiss TPH and the ICRC will work in close collaboration with Somalia Red Crescent Society (SRCS) in a new project to implement a newly developed version of the ALMANACH in the conflict-torn region of South-Central Somalia. The ICRC will support the programme through provision of human resources, of equipment and maintenance of the tablets, improvement of infrastructure and the general budget for this programme. SRCS will be regularly overseeing the programme on the field level. Feedback on data and management of patients will be shared between ICRC and SRCS. Swiss TPH provides the technical expertise from the assessment, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the program. The project is designed for a time span of four years where ALMANACH will be introduced and tested in 12-14 PHC centres. Finally, operational research and project consolidation measures will be undertaken to evaluate the project's added value. The first implementation results from this exciting project will be expected in the autumn of 2020.
