Course How to Plan Successfully?: Further Information

The How to Plan Successfully course introduces the basic principles of strategic programme and project design and management taking into consideration local, district, national and international evidence and realities. It also focuses on practical aspects of the planning and implementation process, through the use of a simulation exercise and computer based support.

Health professionals (medical doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists), managers, planners, social scientists, health system researchers, educators

The course is also open to participants with a DAS in Health Care and Management (HCM): From Research to Implementation (or equivalent) and is offered as an elective for students pursuing the MAS in International Health.

  • DAS in Health Care and Management in Tropical Countries (HCMTC) or equivalent course or have working experience in project/programme management
  • English language skills: TOEFL paper 550 / computer 213 / internet 79 – 80 or IELTS 6.0 or native speaker or completed higher education in English (with written proof)  

Please note that the number of participants is limited to 18.

Course content is divided into two parts as follows:

Health Policies and Priorities

  • Reflection on concepts of priority setting, economics and planning
  • Put into practice the principles of management

Planning and Programme Design (as a team)

  • Design of a health programme
  • Preparation of a complete programme proposal
  • Presentation and defense of the completed programme design

At the end of the first week, performance will be assessed based on the presentation of group results.

At the end of the second week, assessment is based on the written proposal and oral presentation of the proposal. In addition, individuals must submit a situation analysis during the course.  

Certification Testimonials confirming attendance will be issued at the end of the course. A certificate is awarded to those participants who have reached at least 60% of the achievable maximum.

Course fee: CHF 3,800

Registered tropEd Master students: CHF 3.350

The fee must be paid 4 weeks before the start of the course. This sum includes the registration fee of CHF 500, due at the moment of acceptance to reserve a place. If a participant does not attend the course, the registration fee cannot be reimbursed. If cancellation is less than 4 weeks before the beginning of the course, an additional fee of CHF 500 will be charged.

Course fee includes: travel from Dar es Salaam to Ifakara, accommodation in Ifakara for the duration of the course, full board and costs for some outdoor activities.

Course fee does not include: Costs for international flights and accommodation in Dar es Salaam

Health, accident and travel insurances are not covered by the institute, but highly recommended.

Scholarships for MBA-IHM study are unavailable at this time.
