75 Years of Tropical Medicine in Switzerland

05.09.2017

In August 2017, the Swiss Society of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology (SSTMP) celebrates its 75th anniversary. On this occasion, the society published a book on its history which is closely intertwined with the history of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH).

Chronicle of Tropical Medicine in Switzerland

On 31st August 2017, the Swiss Society of Tropical Medicine (SSTMP) held its 75th annual meeting in Basel. The society was founded on 5th December 1943, in Berne. Only four days later, the Swiss Tropical Institute - today Swiss TPH - was established in Basel. The history of these two organisations has remained closely linked since. A chronicle on the history of SSTMP now sheds light on the past 75 years: from colonial medicine to today's global health network.

The book also portrays several members of the society and offers a glimpse into the future. "The chronicle is intended to support the identity building process of SSTMP," says Lukas Meier, Swiss TPH and R. Geigy-Foundation, and author of the book. "Knowing where you are coming from is important when thinking about the future."

About SSTMP

SSTMP represents the interests of all tropical disease specialists and parasitologists in Switzerland, promotes research and facilitates dialogue and collaboration within the various subfields of global health and the broad public. Juerg Utzinger, Director of Swiss TPH, is the President of SSTMP.
