ESCAPE - ESCAPE - European study of cohorts for air pollution effects

ESCAPE is a collaboration of European cohort studies for the quantification of human health effects of long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution.

ESCAPE responds to a specific FP7 call for a large collaborative project in the Environment and Health program. The call asks for research within existing cohorts including those with children elderly adults as sensitive groups, and it asks to consider the role of other environmental exposures such as noise, and the use of biomarkers for gene-environment interactions.

ESCAPE will develop a single methodology for assessing within-city and within-area contrasts in long-term average concentrations of airborne particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. Airborne particulate matter will be characterized as inhalable (PM10) and respirable (PM2.5) particles as well as "soot" and elemental composition. Both NO and NO2 will be measured in view of changing NO/NO2 ratios in primary traffic emissions which may affect compliance with the European legislation with respect to NO2 which will come into force in 2010. ESCAPE includes also pregnancy outcomes and birth cohort studies; respiratory disease outcomes in adults; cardiovascular disease outcomes in adults; and cancer incidence and cause specific mortality. ESCAPE integrates 34 studies with SAPALDIA contributing to more than one of the aforementioned outcome categories.
