Rwanda Covid-19 - Improve the capacity of CHW in the Western province of Rwanda to prevent, detect and respond to COVID-19

Swiss TPH, in partnership with Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Government of Rwanda has been working for more than a decade  to support and strengthen health systems in the Western province of Rwanda. After seeing an increase of COVID-19 cases in the rural areas of the Western province, Swiss TPH with funding from SDC expanded the existing collaboration to help Rwanda prevent the further spread of Covid-19 in the areas where we had been working. The project aims to improve the capacity of community health workers (CHWs) of the Western province of Rwanda to prevent, detect and respond to COVID-19 by promoting national prevention, management and control measures for the transmission of COVID-19. The project will support community interventions and ensure a strong follow up of COVID 19 cases through community contact tracing by CHWs. The project will also ensure personal protecting equipment for CHWs in the areas where we will work.

Specifically, the project will ensure that CHWs are equipped with skills and knowledge to conduct community engagement activities to identify signs, symptoms and transmissions processes of COVID 19. The project will also support CHWs to implement strategies to mitigate the impact of the disease through door-to-door sensitization and enforcement of control measures at the community level. CHWs will also contribute to the ongoing initiatives to detect COVID 19 cases at the community level by facilitating contact tracing and ensuring a good relationship with the community and medical personnel engaged in COVID 19 response.
