Dr. Alain Amstutz, MD

Function(s)
Postdoctoral Scientific Collaborator

Organisational Entity

Alain Amstutz is a physician researcher with a focus on clinical HIV research in Southern Africa, mainly Lesotho. He completed his PhD (Clinical Research) at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute & University Hospital Basel in August 2021. His PhD was funded by the SNSF/SAMW MD-PhD program (Project link) and resulted in 13 first- or last-author publications.

He had a major coordinating role in three randomized clinical trials: i) Revising the current HIV viral load threshold used in the WHO guidelines for defining HIV treatment failure (SESOTHO trial main publication / SESOTHO project page), ii) evaluating oral HIV self-testing in the community (HOSENG trial), iii) assessing decentralized community-based antiretroviral treatment initiation and delivery (GET ON webpage / VIBRA project page). He is also the Principal investigator of a cluster-randomized trial that assessed an innovative model of care for adolescents living with HIV in Lesotho, funded through a grant from the International AIDS Society (PEBRA funding / PEBRA protocol / PEBRA webpage / PEBRA project page).

His research projects are part of the International HIV and Chronic Disease Care group led by Prof. Dr. Niklaus Labhardt, closely developed and implemented with all stakeholders of the groups' Swiss-Basotho research consortium: Swiss TPH, Ministry of Health Lesotho, University of Basel and SolidarMed (NGO, active in Lesotho for over 50 years).

He had the privilede to live and work in Lesotho for four years.
