Human and Animal Health

The Human and Animal Health research unit (HAHU) focuses on the health of mobile populations and zoonoses control in developing countries, using an extended "One Health" conceptual approach. It examines the synergistic potential of closer cooperation between the human health and animal health sectors. Particular attention is paid to the added value of human and animal health; and the financial savings and environmental benefits from collaboration between all involved sectors. Increasingly, systemic approaches are pursued, which consider health as an outcome of social-ecological systems given its connections to social, cultural, economic and ecological dimensions. The HAHU uses a broad range of methods in epidemiology, molecular biology, mathematical modelling, bio-statistics, medical anthropology, sociology and economics. HAHU is a member of a number of large networks, like NCCR North-South, EU FP7 ICONZ, and Afrique ONE.
