Foundations

The R. Geigy Foundation

During his life time, Professor Rudolf Geigy established two foundations to support the Swiss Tropical Institute. These have now been combined to form the R. Geigy-Stiftung (RGS). The aim of the Foundation is to support activities that cannot be financed from other sources. One of the primary aims of the original foundations was to support young scientists doing field work and to help scientists to publish their results. Grants are also made for the acquisition of special pieces of equipment and for special expenses such as renovation of the buildings. Support from the RSG for research is indicated under 'Funding' in the individual sections of the Report.

Jubilee Foundation

The Jubilee Foundation was established in 1993, to mark the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Institute. The purpose of the Jubilee Foundation is to promote innovative research in the STI in the following areas:

  • Life-threatening malaria
  • Urbanisation and Urban Health
  • Health and environment in the Sahelian zone.

The work of the Foundation is supported by contributions from various sources, especially an initial contribution of 100,000 Swiss francs from the Rudolf Geigy Foundation. The President of the Board of the Foundation is the Director of the Swiss TPH, Professor Marcel Tanner. Further information, including project documentation, can be obtained from the Directorate of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.
