Parasitology in the Tropics
From June 8.-18. the 2nd course „Parasitology in the Tropics” took place in Ifakara in the excellently equipped Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health (TTCIH). Nine participants from Switzerland and Germany were comprehensively introduced to the laboratory diagnosis of parasitic infections.
Besides lectures, emphasis was laid especially on practical lab work, where everyone had the opportunity to gather experience with all important diagnostic procedures. Two field excursions to primary schools focused on intestinal parasites and urinary schistosomiasis (including a snail survey in the waters frequented by the local population), respectively.
A trip in a canoe on the Kilombero river as well as a night in the Mikumi National Park with its famous representatives of the East African fauna rounded off the African experience for the participants. A next course is in the planning stage.
