26th European Course in Tropical Epidemiology (ECTE) took place at STI

24 participants from 21 countries attended and successfully completed the 26th European Course in Tropical Epidemiology (ECTE) which took place at the STI in Basel from 20.08 - 07.09. 2007. Course co-ordinator was Prof. Dr. Christian Lengeler.

ECTE is a short course organised by several European centres of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. It is held annually at different European venues, including London, Goteborg, Antwerp, and others.

The lecturers and facilitators for the course are lecturers of these centres of excellence for research in the tropics and have extensive teaching and research experience. This is an intensive course in basic epidemiology and is intended for physicians, nurses, biologists, anthropologists, health programme managers and other professionals with an interest in tropical countries. The course provides participants with basic skills in the epidemiological assessment of health problems and service priorities and in the planning of field studies. Emphasis will be on the methodology and practical application of epidemiological tools in developing countries, the interpretation of data and on the reporting of field studies.

Joint Master Course started in Basel

On 17th September started the research–based joint Master of Science programme on approaches to control communicable diseases. Participating students will obtain a comprehensive insight into the basics of infectious diseases and the strategies of vaccine design and drug discovery.

This course is organized by the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), the Biozentrum of the University of Basel (UoB) and the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI).


10 participants from 6 countries will spend the first 5 months of this 18 months programme in Basel at the STI and the Biozentrum of the University of Basel before they move to Singapore for their research work and selected course modules.

Upon completion of the programme, successful students will receive a joint M.Sc. degree from the National University of Singapore and the University of Basel.
