Environmental Exposure Sciences |
Sally Liu, an environmental exposure scientist and public health expert, leads this unit of 3 research scientists and 3 PhD students. Sally Liu is principal investigator on numerous large-scale air pollution exposure and health assessment studies, including an ongoing diesel bus exhaust study in Seattle, WA (USA), a study focusing on exposure and health impact of trans-Alpine freight traffic (MfM-U), and the regional center of a European-wide Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE). Additionally, she is responsible for the exposure assessment in the Swiss study on Air Pollution and Lung Disease in adults (SAPALDIA). She co-directed the exposure core of the U.S. EPA’s Northwest Particulate Matter Center from 1999 to 2005, and currently leads a staff of 18 in Seattle.
This unit specializes in environmental exposure assessment including environmental pollution monitoring and modelling, source apportionment, and chemical analysis. The primary objective is to develop environmental exposure models for epidemiological studies that better characterize human exposure to environmental pollutants. With long-standing collaborations with researchers at the University of Basel, in the United States, Taiwan, and Europe, the unit will continue its leading role in the area of air pollution exposure assessment. The group is also expanding into noise exposure assessment.
