Günther Fink, Head of the Household Economics and Health System Research unit at Swiss TPH, has been appointed Full Professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Science at the University of Basel, effective 1 February 2024.
Günther Fink is the Eckenstein-Geigy Professor of Epidemiology and Household Economics at the University of Basel, as well as the Head of the Household Economics and Health System Research unit in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Swiss TPH. His research focuses on developing and evaluating innovative approaches to improving health and development in resource-constrained settings, and on measuring the long-term economic benefits of health improvements, particularly during the early childhood period.

His scholarly contributions in epidemiology, health economics and public health, with a particular emphasis on early childhood development in low- and middle-income countries are truly outstanding. Moreover, Günther is a seasoned teacher and fosters partnerships with the Global South. This full professorship reinforces the leading position of Swiss TPH and the University of Basel in health economics that is pivotal for more effective and equitable health systems globally.”
Fink holds an M.Sc. in International Economic Sciences from the University of Innsbruck, Austria, am M.A. in Applied Economics from the University of Michigan, USA, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. Prior to joining Swiss TPH, he researched and taught for 11 years at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, USA.
