The Department of Medicine is built on a foundation of clinical medical services, diagnostics, pharmaceutical medicine and clinical research.
A Centre of Excellence for Travel and Tropical Medicine
Our medical services provide pre-travel advice, post-travel clinical care and diagnostic support for patients as well as consultancies on tropical infectious diseases for medical practitioners and hospitals all over Switzerland. An integrated general medicine practice extends the medical spectrum to include non-infectious diseases with an increasing focus on migration health. The Swiss TPH Travel Clinic sees more than 3,000 people every year for pre-travel advice and vaccinations
The National Diagnostic Reference Centre for Imported Parasitic Diseases
The medical department harbors the National Diagnostic Reference Centre for Imported Parasitic Diseases renowned for its expertise in diagnosing even very rare cases of tropical infectious diseases (accredited according to EN ISO/IEC 17025). Hospitals and practicing doctors across Switzerland and also worldwide send clinical samples to our diagnostic laboratory, where we provide a dedicated emergency service for diagnosing malaria - even outside regular working hours - and see approximately 200 malaria and over 1,200 schistosomiasis cases per year.
