For the first time, heat protection measures in the nursing and care sector have been recorded across Switzerland – with a clear result: heat places significant strain on care staff and there are gaps in the protection of staff, patients and clients.

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense in Switzerland, posing a particular risk to vulnerable populations and placing additional strain on care staff working under already demanding conditions. Commissioned by the Federal Office of Public Health and conducted in collaboration with the Federal Office for the Environment, this Swiss TPH survey captured responses from approximately 900 staff across long-term care facilities, home care services, hospitals and clinics between September and October 2025.
The results show that progress has been made, but gaps remain and concrete action is needed at all levels, from healthcare institutions to policymakers.
