Who We Are

Swiss TPH is a world-leading institute in global health that combines research, education, and services to improve people’s health and well-being locally, nationally and internationally. With a strong focus on low- and middle-income countries, we work at the interface of science, policy and practice to tackle pressing health challenges.

Our work is grounded in scientific excellence, driven by the ambition to turn research into real-world impact, and shaped by a commitment to mutual learning and long-term partnerships. Through collaboration, innovation and shared knowledge, we work to create more equitable and sustainable health systems worldwide.

To make the world a healthier place.

We pursue this by addressing the world’s most pressing health challenges – from climate change and environmental threats to infectious diseases such as malaria and TB, and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases. We strengthen health systems, inform policy, and combine scientific research with practical field implementation to ensure equitable access to healthcare. Through education and training, we empower the next generation of global health leaders.

Swiss TPH is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of people – locally, nationally, and internationally – through excellence in research, education, and services.

We bridge the gap between scientific discovery and practical application, ensuring that innovative health solutions reach those who need them most.

We are guided by four core values that define how we work and collaborate:

✔ Courage – We dare to be bold and take chances.

✔ Integrity – We do what is right, even when it is hard.

✔ Passion – We harness our enthusiasm to make an impact.

✔ Respect – We value others and embrace differences.

Swiss TPH is home to around 1,000 professionals and students from 96 nations, united by a shared commitment to improve global health. Our team includes:

  • Epidemiologists & Public Health Experts – Researching disease prevention and control
  • Clinicians & Life Scientists – Developing diagnostics, treatments and vaccines.
  • Social Scientists & Policy Analysts – Strengthening health systems and policies.
  • Educators & Training Specialists – Empowering the next generation of health professionals.

Our multidisciplinary approach fosters innovation and allows us to address health challenges holistically. By combining expertise across different fields, we ensure a comprehensive understanding of global health issues and develop effective, sustainable solutions.

Founded in 1943 as the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI), Swiss TPH has always combined research, education, and medical services. Early work focused on parasitology and vector-borne diseases such as malaria and African sleeping sickness. In the 1950s, field laboratories were established in Côte d'Ivoire and Tanzania, which grew into major research institutions. From the 1960s, the institute expanded its focus from basic research to global health and development. In the 1990s, the institute grew significantly, strengthening its diagnostics, molecular research and international health services. In 2009, it was renamed the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute to reflect its broader mandate in global health. The move to the new headquarters in Allschwil in 2022 provided state-of-the-art facilities and strengthened its global impact.
