Digital Technology - Policy and Technology Assessment of National Health Insurance Information Systems

There is a strong movement to apply digital technologies as a means of strengthening health systems and social protection delivery, in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) including innovations for demand generation, better management of information, and improved efficiency of health workers.  More and more countries are establishing Universal Health Coverage as a goal around which national health financing strategies are being drafted or aligned. Countries are strengthening their health financing functions of revenue raising, pooling and purchasing increasingly through creation or consolidation of their respective forms of National Health Insurance (NHI). While technology is a means to an end, it is an important cogwheel of an efficient (cost effective and sustainable) as well as successful NHI, forming an integral part of health care systems in these countries. The project on behalf of ADB, aims to assess technologies applied by NHI as the basis to disseminate insights on successful examples from the region and to provide advise to existing and upcoming NHI’s on technologies for the future. The assessment will be undertaken in multiple countries across regional classifications of ADB covering the Asian continent.

Involved Regions: East Asia and Pacific, South Asia
