Alexander Schulze Takes Up Role as Head of Services at Swiss TPH

We warmly welcome Alexander Schulze as new Department Head responsible for all entities that provide services in the area of global health, medicine, diagnostics and clinical operations. Schulze will also join the Managing Board of Swiss TPH. With this appointment, Swiss TPH has taken an important step in strengthening its implementation-oriented functions.

On 16 June 2025, Alexander Schulze joined Swiss TPH as a new Department Head. In his role, Schulze will oversee all service entities at Swiss TPH, including the Swiss Centre for International Health, the Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine, the Diagnostic Centre and the Clinical Operations unit.
“I am very pleased to welcome Alexander Schulze to Swiss TPH,” said Jürg Utzinger, Director of Swiss TPH. “He brings an impressive track record of leadership and strategy development in global health, with expertise across sectors. His appointment assures our ability to deliver high-quality services that support health systems and improve health outcomes worldwide.”
Schulze brings more than 25 years of experience in global health and international cooperation, spanning leadership roles in the public sector, philanthropic foundations and the private sector. Most recently, he served as Chief Programme Officer at Fondation Botnar, where he led the foundation’s global philanthropic portfolio. He previously headed the Global Health Division at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and held senior positions at the Novartis Foundation.
“I’m delighted to take on this new role at Swiss TPH,” said Alexander Schulze. “Through various collaborations over the past 20 years, I’ve witnessed the institute’s unique strength in combining research, education and implementation to improve health for all. I look forward to building on this foundation and helping shape the strategic direction of institute.”
Schulze holds a PhD in Development Sociology from the University of Bayreuth and a postgraduate diploma in Development Cooperation from ETH Zurich. His work focused on a variety of aspects in global health, including equitable access, financing, neglected tropical diseases, young people’s health and private sector engagement. He has served on the Ethics and Governance Committee of The Global Fund, was a member of the Advisory Council to the Lancet Global Health Commission on High-Quality Health Systems and Co-Chair of the Global Network for Health Financing and Social Protection, P4H.
