Diagnostic Centre

The Diagnostic Centre at Swiss TPH specialises in the diagnosis of parasitic infections and tropical diseases. As an accredited laboratory (EN ISO/IEC 17025, STS 0426), it offers hospitals, medical practices, and laboratories in Switzerland and abroad a broad range of diagnostic services – from common infections to rare and complex parasitoses.
 

Together with the Swiss TPH Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine, the Diagnostic Centre forms the National Reference Centre for Malaria (NZMa). In this role, it ensures reference, emergency, and confirmatory malaria diagnostics in Switzerland and advises laboratories and clinics on the investigation and management of malaria cases. → Learn more
 

Our core focus is the diagnosis of parasitic infections in humans. In addition, we provide tests for selected bacterial and viral infections associated with travel and the tropics, such as acute gastroenteritis and arbovirus infections. A broad range of microscopic, serological, and molecular methods is available for this purpose. Continuous refinement of existing tests, along with the development and validation of new diagnostic methods, is integral to our work. 

We have particular expertise in the serological diagnosis of specific helminth infections transmitted through the consumption of undercooked fish, seafood, or other intermediate hosts (e.g., Gnathostoma spp., Anisakis spp. and Angiostrongyluscantonensis).
 

Our diagnostic work is closely linked to research, teaching, and international collaborations. We are actively involved in the training and continuing education of laboratory and clinical professionals and support national and international research projects.
 

The Diagnostic Centre of Swiss TPH is accredited according to the standard ISO/IEC 17025.

Swiss TPH regularly offers diagnostic courses focusing on the diagnosis of malaria, intestinal protozoa or helminths. The courses provide an insight into the biology and epidemiology, detection methods and clinical aspects of these tropical parasites. Participants will benefit from the expertise of lecturers with many years of laboratory and clinical experience. Courses are held in French and German.
