On Tuesday, 9 January 2024, the new location of the Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine was officially opened in the “Turmhaus” at Aeschenplatz 2. The Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine is part of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH). Eva Herzog, President of the Swiss Council of States and President of the Board of Governors of Swiss TPH, gave a welcome address to guests from the healthcare sector, politics and academia. Lukas Engelberger, Cantonal Councillor Basel-Stadt, was also among the guests.

For 80 years, doctors have been advising, vaccinating and treating travellers at Socinstrasse in Basel as the medical and diagnostic unit of Swiss TPH. When Swiss TPH moved its 700 employees and students based in Switzerland to a new building in Allschwil at the beginning of 2022, the medical team remained at Socinstrasse.

Now, however, the Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine has also left its historic location in the "Villa zur Föhre" near the Brausebad and moved into the “Turmhaus” at Aeschenplatz 2 in Basel per 1 January 2024. The new practice with consultation rooms, laboratories and offices was officially opened today by Eva Herzog (President of the Council of States and President of the Board of Governors of Swiss TPH), Jürg Utzinger (Director of Swiss TPH), and Esther Künzli and Andreas Neumayr (Co-Heads of the Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine).

"With the Turmhaus, we have found an ideal location for our Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine," said Jürg Utzinger, Director of Swiss TPH. “Thanks to its new location just a few minutes' walk from the SBB railway station, the centre is even more conveniently accessible.”

The R. Geigy Foundation - the foundation of Swiss TPH – has also moved from Socinstrasse to neighbouring offices in the Turmhaus. "We are delighted with our new location. This striking building contributes to the appeal of the Centre for Tropical and Travel Medicine and the R. Geigy Foundation," said Utzinger.
