Diagnostic Courses in Medical Parasitology
Overview
Malaria, infections with intestinal protozoa and helminths are of major importance in travellers, migrants and endemic settings in low- and middle-income countries. The diagnostic courses in medical parasitology provide insight into the biology and epidemiology, detection methods, and clinical aspects of these tropical parasites. A key focus is the examination of microscopic preparations and demonstration of parasitic samples. Furthermore, these one-day courses concentrate on the practical differential diagnosis of the respective pathogens by microscopy.
Course Description
Malaria
Despite modern molecular diagnostic methods, the direct detection of malaria parasites in blood remains the reference method for malaria diagnosis. In addition to biological, epidemiological, and clinical aspects, the main part of this course is devoted to the differential diagnosis of Plasmodium species. A blind diagnosis at the end of the course allows participants to assess their own skills.
Intestinal Parasites
Infections with intestinal protozoa and helminths are of major importance in travellers. Differential diagnosis of these pathogens is essential, as numerous non-pathogenic unicellular organisms also occur in the intestine. In addition to the assessment of microscopic preparations, the course covers biology, epidemiology, detection methods, and specific diagnostic approaches for intestinal protozoa and helminths.
Who Should Take this Course?
The courses are aimed in particular at biomedical analysts, physicians, biologists, and laboratory managers.
Accreditation
The malaria courses are recognised by the Quality Assurance Commission for the Higher Professional Examination “Expert in Biomedical Analysis and Laboratory Management” as a sub-module of the compulsory elective module in haematology. Within the FAMH continuing education programme, the course is awarded 6 credit points.
