Ending TB: From innovation to impact

24.03.2026

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. In 2024 alone, an estimated 10.7 million people fell ill with TB and 1.23 million died. Yet progress is possible: since 2000, global efforts have saved an estimated 83 million lives.

With the theme Yes! We can end TB!, World TB Day 2026 is a call to action and a statement of intent. Ending TB is achievable – but only with sustained political commitment, strategic investment and a stronger focus on translating innovation into impact where it is needed most.

This means accelerating the development and uptake of new tools, from diagnostics to vaccines, while ensuring they reach people quickly and equitably. It also requires protecting essential TB services, strengthening health systems and addressing the underlying social and economic factors that continue to drive transmission. Ending TB is therefore not only a health priority, but also a broader development and equity challenge.

At Swiss TPH, this integrated approach is at the heart of what we do: advancing research and innovation, strengthening health systems, and working in partnership to ensure that solutions are delivered effectively and sustainably in high-burden settings.

In a short video to mark World TB Day, Swiss TPH experts highlight the importance of combining scientific innovation with equitable delivery, cross-sector collaboration, and sustained global research efforts to tackle TB in all its complexity.
