Improving health in resource-constrained settings requires more than professional expertise: it calls for an understanding of how health systems work, the ability to manage teams and resources, and to lead change. Swiss TPH's Diploma of Advanced Studies in Global Health Systems and Management (DAS GHSM) equips participants with these skills through a practice-oriented approach, from research to implementation.

The programme combines core knowledge and concepts in global public health with a strong focus on health systems, management and leadership. It also supports participants' personal and social development, preparing them to work and lead with confidence in diverse settings. Lectures, group work, practical exercises and organisation visits train participants to analyse problems, find workable solutions and reflect critically on complex issues.
"Our participants come to us with strong professional expertise. What they take home is a deeper understanding of how health systems work, and the confidence to lead change within them," says Karin Gross, study director of the DAS GHSM.
Flexible learning options
The DAS GHSM is designed to fit around working life. Self-paced online preparatory courses lay the groundwork, so the time on site can focus on interactive learning and exchange with lecturers and peers. This keeps the on-site time short: six modules of two weeks each at Swiss TPH in Allschwil.
Participants can complete the DAS full-time in 12 weeks, or step by step over two to five years. The modular route combines two certificates, the CAS Global Health Concepts and Research and the CAS Health Systems Management, with a final assignment. Individual modules can also be booked on their own. The DAS GHSM is accredited by the University of Basel (30 ECTS) and is also the core course of the Master of Advanced Studies in International Health (MAS IH).
Building on more than 30 years of experience
Formerly known as the DAS in Health Care and Management, the programme has trained some 700 participants from more than 85 countries and over 40 professional backgrounds. Their experience has directly shaped the new curriculum. Feedback from graduates, gathered in a 2024 Swiss TPH alumni survey, helped ensure that the revised programme reflects the realities of their work and the skills they need most. Exchange with experienced lecturers from research and practice, and with peers from very different contexts, remains a key part of the learning experience.
Start in April 2027
The next course starts on 5 April 2027 at Swiss TPH in Allschwil. Applications received by 31 October 2026 qualify for the early bird rate. To learn more, join the online information session on 15 October 2026, 18:00–19:00 CEST.
